This Glossary is meant to offer the students support for learning key textile terms of the 6 educational modules in all the languages of the project.
LANGUAGE	TERM	Stabilizers/Backing
EN CZ NL PT RO SI	DEFINITION	Stabilizers (woven or nonwoven material) play a crucial role in embroidery because they provide support to main fabric during embroidering. You can also refer to them as backing because they are mainly placed UNDER the main fabric on which you intend to embroider, to make this fabric more stable. Embroidery backings prevent fabric puckering, fabric stretching and deformation of embroideries after laundry. Usually, you need to hold the stabilizer along with the main fabric at its edges. Stabilizers are available in various weights and in various types of material that can be either in precut sheets or rolls. They can be cut-away, tear-away, water-soluble or heat-away when the embroidering is finished. They are usually named according to the method by which they are removed.
