Represents the number of different levels of an input parameter. Most experimental (factorial) plans deal with two (-1, +1) or three (-1, 0, +1) variation levels, however the central composite design deals usually with five variation levels (-?2, -1, 0, +1, +?2). More complex experimental design plans may have even more variation levels, while e.g. fractional factorial plans reduce the number of needed experimental runs by certain rules.
