Un brevet este un drept exclusiv acordat pentru o inventie, care este un produs sau un proces care ofera, in general, un nou mod de a face ceva, sau ofera o noua solutie tehnica unei probleme. Pentru a obtine un brevet, informatiile tehnice despre inventie trebuie dezvaluite publicului intr-o cerere de brevet. Brevetele sunt drepturi teritoriale. in general, drepturile exclusive sunt aplicabile numai in tarile sau regiunile in care un brevet a fost depus si acordat, in conformitate cu legea tarii sau regiunii respective.
